In Hollowmere, an old peace has held between the living and the dead for longer than anyone can remember — but peace built on silence only lasts as long as no one asks the wrong questions. When a stranger arrives asking about moths, and finds a lonely man willing to talk, the valley's oldest secret starts to unravel one loose thread at a time.

As the town gathers for its annual Harvest Dance — lanterns strung between the chestnut trees, cider warm, fiddles playing the same six reels they always do — three very different men are running out of patience with each other, and with the woman none of them can quite bring themselves to stop wanting. One speaks in centuries. One has never learned to wait. And one just handed a hunter everything he needed.

By the time the fog rolls in off the lake, it will be too late to be careful.
